With training and engagement work already underway in 2026, we want to share highlights of our training activities in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region in 2024 and 2025. Home to more than half of all global Internet users, the APAC region is important for ICANN's technical capacity-building work.
During this period, we conducted more than 100 training and engagement sessions for over 3000 professionals across 20 economies in the expansive APAC region. We collaborated with country-code top level domain registries, governments, Internet service providers, mobile operators, network operator groups, etc., to deliver training initiatives.
The following examples offer a glimpse of the geographic and topical breadth of the engagement work in the APAC region over the two years: speaking engagements at Internet forums in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands; technical workshops for Internet service providers in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand; and technical training for registries in Bhutan, Mongolia, and Sri Lanka.
We also reached out to a large number of stakeholder groups in the region through collaboration with external parties, such as the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre, Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association, Internet Society Chapters, and more.
One of the important focus areas of technical engagement in the APAC region has been to create awareness about Domain Name System (DNS) security best practices among DNS operators. In this regard, the Knowledge-Sharing and Instantiating Norms for DNS and Naming Security (KINDNS) framework directly supports DNS operators such as registries, registrars, and Internet and hosting service providers who operate authoritative servers, resolvers, and related infrastructure by offering practical guidance to strengthen security, resilience, and abuse mitigation practices. To provide a practical understanding of KINDNS and deliver effective training, we used a virtual lab infrastructure that provided a safe, hands-on environment where learners could practice real-world tasks without risking production systems. The lab also supported remote participation, and by simulating realistic scenarios, improved engagement, deepened understanding, and helped participants to confidently apply current best practices in their work environments.
To further enhance our engagements in the APAC region, we plan to strengthen our technical engagement resources in 2026!
